Unless you are one of the few that have had to make a claim you may be in the dark about how many of these warranties work and that you must do your homework and be fully prepared to deal with these companies as closely as you would deal with any insurance company when filing a claim.
Be very careful when purchasing these warranties on your heating and air conditioning equipment as the fine print will catch you off guard in many cases. In most if not all cases you must maintain the equipment because if it is found to be in need of maintenance and as a result has failed and requires repairs they may not cover the repair.
Like any insurance company, and this is really how these companies operate, you must be prepared to negotiate the claim and even argue your position with them. Like any insurance company these warranty companies will take the least costly measures each and every time.
This becomes a problem for contractors like us because we will be honest with our customers and if they have an old air conditioner that requires substantial repairs we will recommend that the entire unit be replaced because it simply makes no sense to put that much money into something that will break down again in the near future.
Well this is when the trouble usually really starts with these companies because again they want the cheapest solution each and every time and it is up to you to literally fight them because they will not let go of the money easily. This can takes days and even weeks so be fully prepared in this particular case to not have air conditioning or heating under these circumstances for much longer then you would care to put up with.
Are we suggesting that these extended warranties are no good, not really. What we are suggesting is that you really understand what you are paying for, it is really insurance against a break down and like any insurance when you do file a claim it may not be a pleasant experience.
In most cases the process does go through without much pain if the repair is fairly simple and is low in cost, it may take a few hours or just a few days to get authorization for your repair. But if the repairs are costly or the right thing to do is replace the equipment then you must be fully prepared to go through much more pain than most people are willing to put up with.
So if you have an extended warranty on older heating and air conditioning equipment that is not in very good condition and you run into the position that making another repair is just not financially a smart solution then be fully prepared to call them daily if not several times a day, be fully prepared to negotiate the final settlement on your claim, be fully prepared to get upset over the whole thing and please understand that your local HVAC contractor is stuck in the middle of the entire mess and has no control over what is done or said after they provide their recommendation or estimate to the warranty company.
